Art Photography

Application

Art to me is something that is created through use of imagination and skill creating something such as an object, enviroment or experience which can be shared with others. For example it could be a piece of music which makes the listener feel happy or sad or even a picture which captures the mood of a certain setting like a war or a wedding.

List of art photographers

Carol Henry is a fine art photographer who does not use a camera.

Raymond Moore was an important post-war English art photographer.

Ansel Adams was a master of fine art photography.

Robert Mapplethorpe another fine art photographer, his photos stirred controversy and would be banned from an art gallery.

Andrew Prokos specializes in skylines, cityscapes, and landscapes.

Conceptual Photography

Conceptual photography is like a movie the picture is set up to look exactly how the photographer wants it. Most of the time allot of the picture is made up using editing software on computers to get the desired look but some conceptual photos do not get edited at all and instead have the subjects of the photo set up precisely to make the final outcome of the picture what they wanted it to be.

At the Brighton Photo Biennial the photographs i had seen varied quite drasticly there was allot of great pictures there not all making sense to me but still allot of them were quite stunning. A few left me wondering what inspired the photographer at the time to take such a picture and a few left me wondering what are they aiming for. The photos taken by Stephen Gill were very inspiring and i liked the idea of putting objects on the cameras lens to give the viewer a more involved experience with what is happening in the photo.

Context

The context can vary greatly in art photography depending on the picture shown and how the photographer wants it to come across to viewers. For example some pictures at the (BPB) didnt have frames they were just hanged up on the wall letting the picture do all the talking while other pictures were pinned unto a white background complementing the pictures colours and scenery.

Techniques

There is allot of different techniques involved with art photgraphy and I saw allot of those techniques at the (BPB). As i stated above the technique where Stepehn Gill placed objects on the camera lens to give the picture a more involving experience. Or the pictures which made heavy use of slow shutter speeds making a night time picture appear asif it was taken during daylight. Also another use of the slow shutter speed was where there was a bright light which went across the picture from a young boy who they must of told to run across the picture and stop at a certain position which created that certain effect. Also another technique used was there was a room which was presented in the form of a cabin of an airplane which had pictures on the wall of airplanes cabins which created a nice effect for the viewers.

Introduction To Fashion Photography

Application
Fashion photography is a genre of photography devoted to displaying clothing and other fashion items. The first fashion model was said to be Virginia Oldoini who appeared in a book by Adolphe Braun which contained 288 photographs of Virginia in her official court garb. In the 20th century fashion photography took a huge leap forward thanks to halftone printing allowing fashion photographs to be featured in magazines. One of the first appearence's of fashion photography in a magazine was the french magazine La Mode Pratique.

Context
Fashion photography is shown through many different mediums it can vary from features in magazines such as vogue or it could be featured in books or on internet sites also. The way fashion photography has been displayed has changed drasticly thanks to the constant progression of technology making it possible to be viewed by a greater audience.

Techniques
The techniques used in fashion photography vary greatly, When fashion photography started in the 20th century it was nothing like what it has turned out to be in this current day. Photos used to take an hour before it was possible to view them but now photos can be viewed instantly.

Portraiture

Application

A portrait is a representation of the person it is taken of, A portrait is meant to portray a persons emotions, mood or even personality in fine detail. Before the camera was invented portraits were only made for the rich and powerful because they was very expensive.

A Portrait Taken Of King Henry

Context

Portraits are used in many different ways for example kings and queens would hang them in places such as above the fireplace or another example would be that portraits get displayed in art galleries or family homes. Portraits are even used for things such as id cards or passports or even as display pictures on internet sites. Portraits were also manipulated by photographers to show what the photographer wants you to see. Photographers such as Larry Clark used portraiture to expose the reality of American suburban life showing through his photos things such as ilegal drug use, underage sex and violence. Whereas photographer Diane Arbus used portraiture to show pictures of people whose normality seemed ugly or surreal.

Photo Journalism

Application

Photo journalism started around the 1930's with the launch of the leica camera in germany. A photographer under the name of Henri cartier bresson with the use of the leica camera created photo journalism and is looked upon as the godfather of photo journalism. Henri cartier bresson captured many stunning moments with his photos but there is one such picture which is revered highly for how it captures a decisive moment perfectly.

Context
There is many situations where photo journalism is displayed in different ways to give an insight into certain events for example the second world war in 1944 which is also known as D-Day. Robert Capa armed with two contax II cameras mounted with 50mm lenses and several rolls of spare film swam ashore with an assault wave on Omaha Beach and captured over 100 photos of the invasion in its first couple of hours. Even so only 10 photos were published to the world by "Life Magazine" on June 19th 1944 due to an accident in "Life Magazines" darkroom caused by a member of staff. These photos captured by Capa truely showed a stunning insight into D-Day and really showed the audience a brief glimpse into what it was like to be in that situation.

Techniques
The Techniques used in photo journalism have changed drasticly over time, As technology has progressed so has photo journalism and the way that it is captured. the leica was the camera which made photo journalism possible when it was first released in the 1920's, Due to the amazing features it provided the user. The leica was small, compact and quiet, it was a huge leap forward in photography at that present time and made it possible for photographers like henri cartier bresson to capture decisive moments which would not have been possible without the use of the leica.

Introduction To Photography

Hello and welcome to my blog

My name is David Mcintosh and this post is about what photography means to me and what i plan to use the knowledge i learn about photography on.

First of to me photography is an art form which i prefer over other sorts like painting for example,Because its a way for me to express art through technology.I have allways been a technical person and i have a fascination for cameras and how they work.So being able to express my own art by using technology was perfect for me and sparked my interest in photography.I see photography as an artform in itself,Because how each person would take a picture would be completely different and unique. Also capturing moments in your life then looking back at them through pictures makes photography even more special.

And finally i plan to put the knowledge i learn about photography into future photos or work i may get involved in,And to improve my skills as a photographer in general.

Thanks for reading.
